Police spokesperson Superintendent Andrew Phiri, last Friday confirmed the latest development.
“Chani is no longer a member of the force. He ceased to be a member of the force on June 25 this year,” he said.
Supt Phiri said Chani had tendered his resignation letter to the force, which has since been processed.
“He should not be referred to as a chief superintendent or senior police officer but as an ex-member,” Supt Phiri said.
Chani, who allegedly fatally assaulted a suspected diamond thief in police cells last year, had his case opened at the High Court circuit in Mutare this week.
High Court Judge Hlekani Mwayera is hearing the case.
Allegations are that Chani assaulted the panner and his three accomplices, with switches after a foiled escape bid from custody.
Prior to the incident, the illegal panners had been arrested by Mbada Diamond Mine security guards who caught them panning and handed them to the police.
It is alleged that while in police custody following their capture, Chani assaulted the illegal panners all over their bodies with switches. Kusena died that night.
