Again it is now the holiday season. A holiday for many children and teenagers means time off from school and books. This is the time they spent a lot of time on television and their favourite channel on DSTV is the Disney Channel. This then reminds me to have an on-look on the channel.
The channel specialises in television programming for children through original children’s television series and movies.
According to DSTV publicity manager Liz Dziva, the channel originally marketed primarily towards younger children, with the exception of their weekend primetime block that is aimed at pre-teens and teenagers.
“The Disney Junior programming block aimed towards toddlers aged 2–5. In recent years, however, the diversity of viewers has increased with an older audience of teenagers, young adults and families.
The platform brands are Disney Channel, Disney XD, Disney Junior, Disney Cinemagic, Hungama TV and Radio Disney,” she said.
It is agreeable that it is one of the most popular TV networks for kids, featuring a seemingly endless array of teen-friendly comedies and musical shows.
While pre-school shows air throughout the morning, come afternoon it’s time for shows aimed at the after school crowd.
However, Cool Lifestyle conducted a survey on the top 10 most popular teen programmes.
1. “Kids incorporated” — One of the earliest series’ on the Disney Channel, “Kids Incorporated” debuted in 1984. It revolved around a group of singing and dancing teens who also dealt with personal issues. The musical numbers were a big part of the show. While the show’s cast rotated over the series’ nine year run, child stars like Fergie, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Brittany Murphy all starred on the show at one time or another.
2. “Lizzie McGuire” — This series starred Hilary Duff as a young teen whose inner thoughts are illustrated by cartoons. Lizzie’s posse, namely her best friends Miranda and Gordo, helped her navigate her way through the perils of junior high. The “Animated Lizzie” segments coupled with the live action segments gave the show a unique look and feel.
3. “Hannah Montana” — Some like it with others hating it but this Miley Cyrus vehicle is one of Disney’s hottest shows ever, spawning off an embarrassment of “Hannah Montana” merchandise like clothing lines, dolls, books and video games. Cyrus was just 13 years old back in 2006 when she signed on as the personable Hannah Montana, a famous pop singer who leads a double life.
4. “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody” — This series starred real life identical twins Dylan and Cole Sprouse as mischievous brothers who live at a posh Boston hotel while their mother works there as a nightclub singer.
The boys have frequent encounters with other hotel residents, like hotel heiress London Tipton (Brenda Song) and frustrated hotel manager Mr Moseby (Phil Lewis). In 2008 the series spun off into “The Suite Life On Deck”, where the twins attended high school aboard a ship that travels around the world.
5. “Sonny With a Chance”. — Teen queen Demi Lovato stars in this appealing show about a girl named Sonny Munroe who lands a coveted part in a teen sketch-comedy show. In a show-within-a-show format, viewers see how her newfound fame changes her life and also get to see episodes of her comedy show. Oh, and all the teen girls get to go gaga over co-star Sterling Knight. This show premiered in 2009 and was picked up for a second season later that year.
6. “That’s So Raven” — Raven Symone starred in this highly popular series about a teen girl with limited psychic powers. Raven has visions of the future, but they get cut off after a few seconds, leaving her to try to figure the rest out. This results in plenty of chaos for Raven and her friends and family.
7. “Wizards of Waverly Place” — This Emmy award winning series stars Selena Gomez, Jake T. Austin and David Henrie as teen wizards. The kids are training to use their magical powers but are only allowed to use their magic under appropriate supervision. To add fuel to the fire, someday they will have to compete against one another to determine which of them gets to remain a wizard.
8. “Good Luck Charlie”. — It is an original Disney Channel sitcom, revolving around a Denver family, the Duncans, as they try to adjust to the births of their fourth and fifth children, Charlotte “Charlie” Duncan (Mia Talerico) and Toby Duncan.
In each episode, Teddy Duncan (Bridgit Mendler) creates a video diary containing advice for Charlie about their family and life as a teenager. Teddy tries to show Charlie what she might go through when she is older in the video diaries for future reference. Each video diary ends with Teddy (or someone else from the family, even Charlie) saying the eponymous phrase, “Good luck, Charlie”.
9. “Shake It Up”. — Created by Chris Thompson and starring Bella Thorne and Zendaya, the show follows the adventures of Cece Jones (Thorne) and Rocky Blue (Zendaya) as they star as background dancers on a local show, “Shake It Up Chicago”.
It also chronicles their misadventures on and off-set, and their troubles and rising social status at school. The show’s original concept was for Disney to create a female buddy comedy, only with a dance aspect. The dance concept is Disney’s third original series, after “The Famous Jett Jackson” and “Sonny with a Chance”, to use a show-within-a-show format.
10. “Phineas and Ferb” — Is an American animated comedy-musical television series. Every day, the boys embark on some grand new project, which annoys their controlling sister, Candace, who frequently tries to reveal their shenanigans to the boys’ mother, Linda Flynn-Fletcher, and less frequently to their father, Lawrence Fletcher.
The series follows a standard plot system; running gags occur every episode, and the B-Plot almost always features Perry the Platypus working as a spy (“Agent P”) for the OWCA (Organisation Without a Cool Acronym), to fight an evil scientist named Dr Heinz Doofenshmirtz.
