Top DJs for ‘Shisa Nyama’

to life. If you love soul, RnB and jazz this is where it will be happening. But the DJs will also crank it up a bit in the evening with some serious house music. Only last weekend, Huggie’s Entertainment teamed up with one of the revered DJs, Hosea “The Hitman” Singende, who mesmerised the crowd with the “Jacking Zone”, a programme which he used to present when he was still at the then Radio 3 now Power FM.

This weekend is likely to offer fans of “Shisa Nyama”, a rare treat as music, food and drink go hand-in- hand.
We are told the legendary Kudzi “Mr Kool” Marudza, Witness “Chuman” Matema and DJ Candy will  be dishing out the very best in music. Those who love yesteryear music will have enough dosage courtesy of Mr Kool who has been running the show on Power FM since the 1980s with the likes of the late radio guru Josh Makawa. Mr Kool knows his music like the back of his palm.

Once he takes over the turntables you are assured of a fantastic voyage into sound as Mr Kool throws down some serious party jams from the 1970s right up to the 1990s.
But somehow things will be done differently when Chuman and D-Train take turns to spin the hits.

D-Train is a class of his own and he is a joy to listen to. His music taste appeals to the mature and trendy audience who patronise the joint while Chuman will make things easy on a Sunday afternoon with some jazz classics. This is the first time that the hotel is introducing the “Shisa Nyamas” which are popular in South Africa on Sundays and there will be a wide array of meats from lamb, mutton, pork, chicken, beef as well as traditional dishes on offer.

Osborn Chiukuseh, who is the executive director at ZimCafe Hotel, said everyone is invited to the Shisa Nyama. “It is not a new concept but those that have been to South Africa’s middle class suburbs will know how popular the Shisa Nyamas are. We are going to be hosting it every Sunday with soothing music playing in the background as patrons wind down.

The atmosphere will be very warmly and our chefs will be in the open braaing for patrons.
“Besides the BBQ, we have decided to include traditional dishes such as trotters, guinea fowl, road runners and what have you. We know our patrons love our traditional dishes so that is part of the menu,” he said.

Just like the Shisa Nyama down south, which literally means “burn the meat” in isiZulu, is a buy-and-barbecue concept that started in South Africa’s townships and has taken off among Johannesburg’s middle class. On Sundays, local butcheries spill out of their shops, grilling meat on an open fire to your specifications.

What started off as a way for township butcheries to increase their weekend sales has grown in popularity, becoming a place where people go to relax and socialise.
To the grilled offerings were added informal bars, music performances and car washes, catering to those who wanted to while away the afternoon.

As a favourite hangout for up-and-coming professionals and South Africa’s emerging middle class, these sites are quickly becoming large networking sessions where business deals are sometimes brokered.
