AT least 38 drivers and bikers are tomorrow expected to converge at the Bulawayo Motorsport Park for the three-hour HP/Lubes Castrol Endurance Race Day.
After major events, such as the National Championships were shelved this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the race is likely to be the only major event Motorsport Zimbabwe will hold this year.
Several top drivers have registered for the race that will be made up of the main race for vehicles, sprint races and bikes.
Unfortunately, for this year, the race will not feature foreign participants because of the prevailing Covid-19 environment.
But from the cast of local drivers, some of the top competitors expected to take part are Jim and Hamish Perry, in the Saloon A-Class, as well as Byron Norman.
Race secretary, Frances Norman, said they were hopeful of an exciting event, considering most of their members have not been on the track, for quite sometime this year.
“We have got about 29 cars registered of local competitors, being Bulawayo and Harare, and we have got nine bikes registered, also Bulawayo and Harare competitors only.
‘’No foreigners are coming this year.
“We have got the Saloon A-Class, which is your turbo top guys, Jim and Hamish Perry in the BMWs.
‘’We have got also Byron Norman in the Mitsubishi Evo, Rowan Whyte, he is racing with Craig Green, they are in a Subaru.
“Newcomers are father and son, Craig and Phil Archenoul, they are also in a Subaru.
‘’Then, in the B-Class, we have got Calvin Rademeyer, he is racing with Lyle Ramsay.
‘’Darryn Pradgi, he is racing with Phil Minnaar Jnr, they are both in the VW Polos and there is Mano Zevgolis, he is in the Honda Civic,” said Norman.
In the bikes section, Jan Nel and Abel Moyo, are both moving from the 250cc Class to the 600cc Class.
“In the bikers section, we have got last year’s winner Warren Thorne and Mathew Schultz, Doug Mellor and there is Jan Nel, he is a junior.
‘’He is moved up from a 250cc Class to the 600cc Class, he is going to be competing with the big guys.
“Then we have, in the 250cc Class, Shaune and Ricky Whyte while Abel Moyo has moved up from 250cc Class, to a 600cc Class, so he is also competing with the big boys,” said Norman.
A limited number of spectators are expected to attend the event in line with the Covid-19 guidelines after the organisers sought permission from the Sports and Recreation Commission to stage this year’s competition.
