Tottenham inflict further pain on depleted Anzhi

TOTTENHAM Hotspur exposed the weaknesses in Anzhi Makhachkala’s star-shorn squad, winning 2-0 in Moscow to maintain their perfect Europa League start yesterday while Sergio Floccari inspired a stunning fightback draw for Lazio. Jermain Defoe and Nacer Chadli scored first-half goals for Tottenham who then cruised through the Group K clash against the Russian side whose once-impressive line-up has been depleted by a recent clearout.

Lazio striker Floccari came off the bench in the second half with his side trailing 3-1 at Turkish side Trabzonspor in Group J and scored two goals in as many minutes late-on to grab a point for the Italians.

Valencia secured three vital points in Russia, winning 2-0 at Kuban Krasnodar to rebound from their shock Group A defeat at home to Swansea City on the opening matchday, while fellow Spaniards Sevilla beat Germany’s Freiburg by the same scoreline.

Olympique Lyon drew 1-1 with Portuguese side Vitoria Guimaraes with Maxime Gonalons equalising for the French team after Moussa Maazou opened the scoring. The Nigerian was later sent off in injury time for a second booking. – Reuters
