ZIMBABWE Defence Forces athletes found the going tough at the on-going International Military Sports Council (CISM) World Military Games in Wuhan China.
Yesterday, the ZDF team were at the Wuhan Five Rings Sports Centre, where Wellington Allington Varevi finished 8th out of 12 runners in a tightly contested men’s 1500metre race.
Varevi clocked 3mins 53.19 Seconds in a race which was won by Rozmys Michal of Poland in 3mins 46.33seconds.
Ouladha Hicham of Morocco scooped the silver medal while another Polish Marcin Lewandowski picked the bronze medal.
In winning, Michal fell 20 seconds shy of the 1998 World record set by Hicham Guerrouj who clocked 3mins 26s.
In the other event on the same evening, the ZDF team had two athletes who featured in the men’s 5000m race after securing the qualifying times in the heats.
Trust Tatenda Hove finished 9th in 14.30.09s while compatriot Moses Tarakinyu was 12th after 14:37.40s.
Bahrains’ Birhanu Balew won the event in 14.8.99s, Germany Amanal Petros scooped silver (14.9.16) in a close finish with pre-race favourite Peter Ndegwa of Kenya who settled for bronze in a time of 14.9.23.
In other competitions, five Zimbabwean boxers were eliminated in the round of 32 with four others losing out in the round of 16.
Zimbabwe’s best in that discipline was female boxer Rudo Maposa who was ranked fifth in the Women’s welterweight division. In Golf, the ladies team finished 7th out of 8 while their male counterparts received the wooden spoon in a field of 12 teams.
