Tourism Matrix: Miss Zim organisers letting nation down

promoting the brand, “Zimbabwe — A World of Wonders” in which, the people of Zimbabwe are one of the major wonders.
This makes Miss Zimbabwe a critical factor to the marketing, development and promotion of Zimbabwe’s tourism tapestries on the international scene.
Since the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority, which had taken the pageantry to greater heights, pulled out events that have taken place do not point to anything good.
Zimbabweans in their broad totality should take interest and assist the organisers realise that they are dealing with a national brand, that will compete with other national brands on the international scene.
News that the girls are in camp at a tobacco farm, about 10km outside Marondera, must be a wake-up call to all and sundry.
The venue itself does not only undermine the confidence of the participants but speaks volumes of the type of models we want to produce and catapult to the international scene.
For someone to emerge from a tobacco farm in Marondera to win the Miss World title at the grand stand in the world yonder, will certainly be a fairy tale, almost a modern day miracle.
The girls must have gone through a lot of trying times and one of the most difficult times in their careers.
More is yet to come since they are not even sure of when the event will be held.
Indications on the ground are that the organiser ventured into something they are failing to manage, because resources on the ground are not permitting them.
This writer believes that ZTA should have done better by sponsoring the new organisers, at least for this first season but when confronted by this writer a few days ago Mr Karikoga Kaseke defended his decision.
“I have heard about the stories on the girls being at Mhukahuru Farm or something like that in Marondera and wondered whether this has become a Miss Rural pageant.
“The owner of the farm is a well-wisher, but the place is not conducive for this kind of business. You are accusing me of abruptly severing ties with this thing but I have not been approached officially for funding.
“Only a mad man can give someone the kind of huge monies they require without being approached officially. It is common sense that someone was supposed to come to us and sit down and discuss their problems then we decide to come in.
“We have done that in football and other things. But the organisers of Miss Zimbabwe were distributing flyers asking for money at some forum and think that is how to look for funding. It is just silly to expect ZTA to release funds on such pretext,’’ he argued.
But the point is we must assist the organisers do better because at the end of the day, it is Zimbabwe’s pride at stake. Let us assist before things go awfully wrong.
Together we must assist these people who seem lost to stage the best event ever. Please let us help.
