Deputy Minister of Tourism, Tongai Mnangagwa, congratulated the Zimbabwe’s chess team for its impressive start at the ongoing 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary, with the men’s team securing a 3-1 victory over the Virgin Islands in the first round.
“We are thrilled to see our Zimbabwean chess team performing well on the global stage. Their dedication and skill are a testament to the country’s growing talent in the sport. We wish them continued success throughout the Olympiad and look forward to welcoming them back home with pride,” Honourable Mnangagwa said.
“As the Tourism Ministry, we are rallying behind the team, using the hashtags #RiseZimFlagHigh and #GoZimbabweGo to show their support,” he added.

The men’s team, led by Captain Tapiwa Gora, comprises International Masters Farai Mandizha and Rodwell Makoto, FIDE Master Roy Mwadzura, Emarald Mushore, and Vitalis Mapuranga.
The women’s team, captained by Agab Dozva, also faces a tough challenge against Bulgaria in the first round, with team members WCM Kudzanai Chirinda, Christine Makwena, Linda Shaba, Tatenda Zengeni, and Colleta Waburuwarewa ready to make their mark.
Currently ranked 4th in Africa, the Zimbabwe team is determined to make a statement on the global stage.
“The team’s participation in the Olympiad is a testament to the growing popularity of chess in Zimbabwe and the growth of Sports Tourism, with support from local corporates like Minerva Risk Advisors who provided the chess team’s attire,” said Hon Mnangagwa.
The 45th Chess Olympiad runs from September 10-23, with Zimbabwe facing stiff competition from top teams around the world.
