“I am staying at my brother’s place with his child. He told me he could no longer take care of me and the child and I have nowhere else to go,” Paratema said.

“He is the one who urged me to come and apply for an upward variation and I want US$150 that will enable me to fend for his child. He can afford it since he is a kombi driver,” Paratema said.

In his defence Tandi said he could not afford the money.
“I was demoted at work after my boss found that I was driving without a driver’s licence. I am a tout at the moment and I do not understand why I am here since I am not in arrears on maintenance.

“She has a problem of nagging me for more money all the times. I used to earn US$70 every week but now I earn US$50 and the money she is demanding is too much,” Tandi said.

Presiding magistrate Ms Tendai Manhanzva dismissed the application and said there were no changed circumstances on Tandi’s side to warrant an upward review on the maintenance award.
