CONGRUENT to its Smart City dream, City of Mutare believes that healthy residents are a key component of that plan, hence the idea to host a long distance running competition later this year.
The local authority shall be hosting the inaugural Mutare Half Marathon on a date to be announced later this year.
Mutare City Council spokesperson, Mr Spren Mutiwi confirmed that preparations for a marathon are at an advanced stage.
“In line with the thrust of having healthy citizens and wellness, the city will be hosting the maiden Mutare Half Marathon this year. Preparations for this event are at an advanced stage,” said Mr Mutiwi.
Mutare City Council, which bankrolls a number of teams in competitive sporting leagues, was one of the business partners for The Manica Post Health and Wellness event as part of its show of commitment to health and wellness issues.
“As a local authority, we appreciate such (The Manica Post Health and Wellness Day) intervention strategies as this helps to create a healthy citizen that will contribute towards the development of the city and service delivery.
“As a city, we have a wellness and health policy that also promotes healthy living among employees, and this helps the city to discharge its constitutional obligations.
“This shall be our flagship in promoting wellness and for domestic tourism promotion.
“We have a treasure, the unique Christmas Pass which will be part of the route for the Half Marathon.
“Our focus is healthy living in all the wards and we want to promote it through the Half Marathon.
“We want to create a city that has healthy citizens and this is good for sustenance of the city,” said Mr Mutiwi.
