TOWN United’s resurgence continued under new coach John Phiri when they registered an emphatic 6-0 win over varsity students MSU at Dulibadzimu Stadium over the weekend in a Zifa Central Soccer League encounter. The win which is their highest scoreline so far this season saw “Maninja” as the Beitbridge municipal outfit is affectionately known by their supporters extending their unbeaten run to five matches since Phiri took over following the sacking of Beavan Gwamure.
United now lie third with 30 points while MSU’s bid of catching up with the front runners suffered a major setback following the loss as they remain on fifth position with 25 points from 16 matches.
After arriving in the border town with “Maninja” on 10th position, Phiri’s magic wand has transformed the Beitbridge based side to be one of the contenders for the championship and the side could fancy their chance as they are now 12 points behind the log leaders.
Elsewhere, Chapungu continued from where they left off as they completed a double over city rivals Hwahwa, edging the prison services side 1-0 to maintain a 12 point lead at the top of the log standings over second placed Chrome Stars who walloped NM Academy 3-0 in Mvuma.
Chapungu who are still unbeaten have now collected 42 points from 16 matches and are three matches away to equal FC Platinum (then Mimosa) who went for 19 matches without a loss in the inaugural season of the Zifa Central Soccer League in 2010.
Former premiership side Hardbody recorded their third win of the season following a 3-0 drubbing of Tripple B Academy away in Beitbridge, a result which saw them moving out of the relegation zone as they now lie 11th with 17 points.
