TWO brothers whose mission to rob members of a burial society of their money using a toy gun was foiled when police received a tip-off, appeared in court yesterday. Bhekani Moyo (20) and Pilate Moyo (29) both of House Number 8989, Pumula East in Bulawayo were not asked to plead to charges of conspiracy to commit robbery when they appeared before Bulawayo magistrate, Mr Witness Mtetwa.
They were remanded in custody to 26 June.
The prosecutor, Mr Malvern Nzombe, said on 24 May at about 4pm, Mr Mgcini Dube met the two accused persons at Nkulumane Shopping Complex in Bulawayo. The two approached Dube carrying a Samsung cellphone, which they were selling for $15.
The court heard that Dube offered to give the two men $10 before directing them to his house promising to give them the outstanding amount.
Bhekani and Pilate later went to Dube’s house in Tshababala to collect the money.
On arrival at the house, they allegedly spotted a group of people at one of the rooms counting money, the court was told.
They then asked Dube about the people in the room and he told them that they were members of his burial society.
The court heard that Bhekani and Pilate allegedly hatched a plan before they decided to rope in Dube so that he could help them rob the burial society members of their money.
The three men agreed to meet at Nkulumane Shopping Complex two weeks later so that they could strategise on how they would execute their mission.
The court was told that on 8 June, Dube received a phone call from Bhekani inviting him to the shopping complex where they allegedly intended to finalise their plan.
Dube tipped the police informing them of a crime which was about to be committed.
A follow-up was made leading to the arrest of the two Moyo brothers.
Police recovered a toy gun hidden in a bag, which the two men allegedly intended to use in committing the robbery.
