AT least 50 amateur golfers from across the country will today tee off in the fourth edition of the TP Rukawo Golf Tournament at Chegutu Golf Club. Held annually since 2012, the tournament is bankrolled by TP Rukawo Motel and will be played over two days and is an individual stableford event.
Golfers from Harare, Kadoma, Norton, Chinhoyi, Ngezi and Chegutu will be taking part in the event that has become regular on Chegutu golf Club calendar.Tournament director Chris Rukawo yesterday said 50 golfers had confirmed their participation.
“We know for sure that at least 50 golfers are taking part in the tournament that begins tomorrow (today) with 18-holes at Chegutu Golf Club,” Rukawo said.
Last year the tournament was won by Kadoma golfer Kevin Olifiya.
He is among the favourites when the first group of golfers tees off at 9 am this morning.
The top amateur golfers who have confirmed their participation include Olifiya and Colin Zitambira from Kadoma and George Mundanga (Harare).
Olifiya plays off five handicap while Zitambira and Mundanga play off six and nine handicaps.
“We have several top amateur golfers including last year’s Kevin Olifiya, George Mundanga and Colin Zitambira,” Rukawo told The Herald Sport.
Rukawo also revealed that they had partnered several sponsors including Engen Chegutu Service Station, Tiff Service Centre (Kadoma), Cribo Tyres (Kadoma) and Flightcare Logistics.
“We managed to partner with several other sponsors namely Cribo Tyres, Tiff Service Centre both from Kadoma as well as Chegutu-based Engen Service Station and Flightcare Logistics.
“Our partners contributed towards prizes for the tournament as well as other tournament logistics,” Rukawo said.
TP Rukawo Motel will be represented by brothers Chris and Mike, both playing off 12 handicaps and their father, tournament darkhorse Tofirei Philip Rukawo (19 handicap).
The 74-room TP Rukawo Motel is a family-owned business that has been operating since 1992.
