Addressing 25 traditional leaders and District Administrators from Matabeleland North at a Traditional Leaders’ Day Celebrations at 1.2 Infantry Battalion in Hwange, Brig-Gen Moyo said the Zimbabwe Defence Forces value the relationship it has with the traditional leaders. He said the army and traditional leaders’ relationship dates back to time immemorial.
“We are gathered here on an important day in our calendar when we meet with you traditional leaders. This event has become an annual event since 2010 when it commenced here in Hwange. As the army we value the relationship between us and you,” said Brig-Gen Moyo.
“The military and traditional leaders share one similarity and that is working to ensure peace in the country. Traditional leaders are the custodians of our land and cultural values and our duty is to safeguard our sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said
Brig-Gen Moyo said uniformed forces could not be separated from traditional leaders as they depended on the communities.
“The young men and women who took part in the liberation struggle were being assisted by traditional leaders and their communities who provided the food and other logistics. Such gatherings as this one are important because this is when we share ideas on how to maintain peace in our country,” he said.
Speaking at the same celebrations, The Minister of Mines and Mining Development, Dr Obert Mpofu, said the day provided an opportunity for the army and traditional leaders to interact.
