The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe is upset over three buses being involved in two fatal accidents this week.
On Tuesday last week, one person died on the spot after being hit by a bus contracted to Zupco after a tyre burst, resulting in the bus ploughing into people awaiting transport at Dzivaresekwa turnoff along Bulawayo Road.
The accident happened two days after four people died and 67 were injured when two other Zupco buses collided head on along the Harare-Chirundu Highway on Monday.
Traffic Safety Council chairman Mr Kura Sibanda said they were urging drivers to undergo refresher courses and defensive driving lessons to protect passengers on their journeys.
“We have been witnessing a number of road crashes in the country of late and these crashes are largely attributed to negligence,” he said.
“As the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe, we continue to encourage drivers to avoid speeding, drink and driving, road rage, overloading and the use of cellphones while driving.
“We urge drivers to train in Defensive Driving so that they know the precautions to take in the event of a possible road crash. We urge all road users to avoid travelling unnecessarily, however, in the event that they really need to travel then they should plan their journey, keep to well-lit roads and travel during the day.
“Passengers, pedestrians and drivers should all adhere to traffic laws as they are put in place to protect all road users.”
Mr Sibanda attributed most accidents to human error, saying these errors constituted 94 percent of road traffic accidents.
He said road infrastructure constituted one percent and vehicle conditions five percent of road accidents. People cause accidents not bad roads or deficient vehicles.
