A POLICE officer stationed at Bulawayo Central Traffic has been dragged to court for allegedly forcing a kombi driver to pay US$30 bribe for dropping off commuters at an undesignated place.
The cop, Memory Sayi, appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Beverly Madzikatire facing an abuse of office charge.
She pleaded not guilty to the charge. She paid US$100 for bail and was remanded out of custody until 26 August.
A court heard that Sayi and her colleague Zorodzai Matimba were recently assigned to attend an accident scene. On their way back to Bulawayo Central Traffic they saw a kombi dropping commuters at an undesignated place and they apprehended him and took him to
Traffic.
When they were at the station Sayi was assigned to escort him to the Fines office to pay a fine. While they were heading to the office Sayi allegedly told him that his vehicle had a lot of fines which amounted to US$160. It is said she told him that the way out was by giving her US$30 and she would let him go.
The court was told that she was given US$30 after which she released him.
The kombi driver drove to his home and reported the incident to the owner of the car. After that the matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest of Sayi.
