TRAFFIC volumes at Beitbridge have increased since last weekend with travellers using the revamped border post applauding authorities for efficiency in the movement of cargo and passengers this festive season.
Statistics indicate that pedestrians, who previously endured more than three hours in queues to enter or exit the country, can now complete the process in about 30 minutes.
For motorists, border procedures have similarly become more efficient, with waiting times reduced from up to 24 hours to less than two hours, provided they possess the necessary documentation.
Users of the border have praised the separation of traffic into categories for buses, light vehicles, freight and pedestrians.
This targeted approach has led to improved services. Border agencies have also invested in ICT facilities and increased staff to cope with the surge in traffic typically seen during the festive season.
The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) has opened more service points and kiosks to assist motorists applying for Temporary Import Permits (TIPs) for foreign-registered vehicles.
In addition, Zimra has launched an e-TIP system, enabling motorists to submit applications online prior to arriving at the border.
Travellers have noted a significant improvement in what was once a chaotic border environment.
“I have been using this border for five years, and crossing into Zimbabwe or South Africa used to feel like moving mountains,” said Mr Stanford Mandinyenya, a motorist travelling to Gweru.
“This year, I completed all border processes, including immigration and vehicle clearance, in less than two hours.”
