A 49-year-old man was axed to death following a dispute with an ox-drawn scotch-cart transporter over missing groceries at Wentworth Farm, Redcliff, on Monday.
The deceased, Elias Kavhumbura Chimusito, had hired the suspect, 27-year-old Collen Ishmael, to transport his groceries from Rutendo to Wentworth Farm.
However, upon arrival, Chimusito discovered that some items were missing and refused to pay for the service.
Ishmael allegedly took an axe from the scotch cart and struck Chimusito on the head and left shin, killing him instantly.
Midlands Provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, confirmed the murder of Chimusito.
“A 49 – year – old man was axed to death following an altercation with an animal-drawn scotch-cart transporter over his missing groceries at Wentworth Farm, Redcliff, on Monday, April 6, at about 8:30 pm,” he said.
Insp Mahoko said Chimusito of Rutendo suburb in Redcliff hired the suspects’ ox-drawn scotch cart to transport his groceries from Rutendo to Wentworth Farm.
He said on arrival at the destination, he discovered some grocery items were missing and refused to pay for the transport service.
“This angered Ishmael, who took an axe from the scotch cart which he used to strike Chimusito on the head and left shin and died on the spot,” said Insp Mahoko.
He said ZRP Redcliff attended the scene leading to the arrest of Ishmael, while the deceased’s body was taken to Kwekwe General Hospital Mortuary, awaiting post-mortem.
Insp Mahoko said Ishmael is expected to appear in court facing a murder charge.
“We have once again lost a life in circumstances where dialogue should have been the best route in finding a solution,” he said.
“We once again implore the public to engage elders and counsellors whenever they have differences.”
