ZIM aligns APRM recommendations with national development frameworks

A WORKSHOP on mapping Zimbabwe’s National Programme of Action from the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) recommendations enters day two today, with stakeholders focusing on aligning the proposals made by fellow Member States after the February Addis Ababa meeting with national development priorities.

The workshop, which kicked off in Harare yesterday and is expected to end on Friday, comes after Zimbabwe undertook a targeted review on governance and management in November last year.

President Mnangagwa presented the targeted review country report at the African union Summit in Ethiopia, where fellow Heads of State and Government made recommendations to strengthen governance systems and improve development outcomes.

The Government has now moved to align the recommendations with national frameworks during the ongoing workshop, which brought together ministries, independent commissions, development partners and civil society organisations.

Today’s focus is on ensuring that the recommendations are fully integrated into policy and planning processes.

Deliberations are centred on the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), the blueprint outlines that country’s priorities in economic growth, governance reforms and social development.

Participants are mapping the APRM recommendations against these priorities, which are aimed at ensuring consistency and effective implementation.

The exercise is expected to produce a clear implementation matrix that links recommendations to specific sectors, timelines and responsible institutions.

This is meant to improve coordination and avoid duplication across Government programmes.

Zimbabwe continues to demonstrate commitment to continental governance processes under the African union APRM, which provides a platform for peer learning and accountability among member States.

As the workshop progresses, attention is shifting to the consolidation of inputs and refinement of strategies.

The outcome is expected to guide implementation and ensure that the recommendations translate into tangible national development results.

Renowned researcher Dr Sampson Osei is today leading events at the workshop.
