A Mutoko man was reportedly attacked and killed by hyenas on his way from a local business centre where he was drinking beer with friends.

The man’s remains were found a few metres from the road. Police spokesperson for Mashonaland East, Inspector Simon Chazovachiyi, confirmed the incident.

“It is reported on August 30 2025, and at around 4 pm, the now deceased went to Katsukunya Shops, Mutoko, to drink beer,” he said.

“At around 6 pm, the now deceased was seen sitting by the road and he appeared drunk. Those who saw him advised his wife, Ashely Kachidza (48).

“On August 31 2025 and at around 6 am, Kachidza and her son Christ Pasi (13) woke up and made some follow-ups after noticing that the now deceased had not returned home.

“As the two were on their way to Katsukunya Shops, they saw and positively identified one of the now deceased’s shoes by the roadside. They then noticed some struggle marks and blood all over the grass until they discovered his body some 10 metres from the main road. A police report was made and officers attended the scene.”

He said the two found the body without a shirt and with visible injuries.

“His stomach was ruptured, his hands had been mauled and some of his intestines were protruding,” he said.

“Footprints of hyenas were discovered around the scene. Blood spots and pieces of the deceased’s torn red shirt were seen around the area.

“Flesh around the abdomen, the left shoulder and left hand was eaten up, which suggested that the deceased was attacked by wild animals.

“The body was conveyed to Mutoko District Hospital mortuary. Investigations are in progress.”
