VILLAGERS from Tshebetshebe village in Lupane were left in shock on Monday morning after the lifeless body of Pedious Mpofu, a local resident, was discovered hanging from a tree in what police and villagers suspect to be a case of suicide.
The discovery has sent waves of grief and speculation through the rural community.
According to sources close to the family, Mpofu, who was in his late 40s, was allegedly found hanging near his homestead by a passerby.
The tragic discovery has sparked rumors within the small village, with some residents claiming that Mpofu may have taken his own life out of shame following a personal incident that unfolded over the weekend.

One villager, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that Mpofu was allegedly caught in a compromising position with another man, Edson Mhlanga, by his own children.
“It appears his children walked in on him and Mhlanga in a situation that left them very upset,” said the villager. “The children were not happy at all, and it seems this could have pushed him to take such a drastic step.”
Speculation about Mpofu’s relationship with Mhlanga has long been a topic of hushed conversations in the community. Another villager, Sibongile Ncube, shared that there had been lingering suspicions about the two men.
“For a long time, people have been suspecting that Mpofu and Mhlanga were involved in a romantic relationship,” Ncube said. “It was something people whispered about, but his children seemed to have a hard time accepting it. They didn’t take it to heart, and I believe the tension at home was growing because of this.”
The incident has reignited conversations about societal attitudes toward same-sex relationships, particularly in conservative rural communities where such matters remain taboo.
Many villagers expressed sadness over the loss of Mpofu but noted that the pressures he faced may have contributed to his tragic end.
Local authorities have confirmed that investigations into the death are underway.
A police spokesperson, when reached for comment, urged members of the community to respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time.
“We are handling this matter with the sensitivity it deserves and will release more information once investigations are complete,” said the spokesperson.
