Former Transit Crew member, Zinyengere Rungano Chaza has announced the release of his debut solo album, Chitima, which he plans to launch on his 40th birthday on July 15.
Chaza, who studied Musicology at the Zimbabwe College of Music, says he has developed his own genre of Afro-fusion, Afro-jazz and reggae music, and is backed by the Tru Colours Band.
As he tests the waters, Chaza’s compilation album is laden with well-knit songs, going by the listening session.
Some of the tracks to look forward to are Haupenge, Moyo Wangu, Chipa vane Rudo, Shamwari, Dzokera, Kuyanana and the title track Chitima.
A school teacher at Greystone Primary School, Chaza has evolved from his early days with Transit Crew.
“At Transit Crew, we did a lot of reggae music which was the group’s identity.
“A number of players have worked with the group before and left since it’s known that Transit Crew is more than a group, but an institution.
“Currently, I am into Afro-fusion, Afro jazz and some reggae. I have since created my own unique type of music, which is set to capture the hearts of many.”
The multi-instrumentalist is known for his strengths on vocals. “I eat and dream music all the time, which I thoroughly enjoy,” he said.
“I’m one of the few artists who can play a number of instruments such as marimba, keyboards, piano and mbira.
“My biggest strength is on vocals, which shows that I have a calling for what I am doing in my career. I just can’t resist my calling for music because it has made me who I am today.
Chaza survived a road accident and says it’s by the grace of God that he is still alive today.
“My career almost came to an end when I was involved in a road accident. It’s a miracle that I am still alive.
“I see the hand of the Lord and this keeps me going. I will always be grateful to Him for saving my life,” he said.
A father of two sons, Chaza has pledged to empower young artists.
“I think I was born a natural teacher who is determined to transform young people’s lives. Of course, my children are in safe hands, but I am more than willing to help other kids who need our expertise.
“I want to be remembered as someone who changed other people’s lives. In life, we can only make the world a better place to live in if we work together and help each other.”
