EcoCash is a mobile money transfer service that allows subscribers from Zimbabwe’s leading telecommunications firm Econet to send and receive money.
Last year, Econet availed the service to businesses in various sectors such as transport and retailing.
According to Econet, the service has of late been well received in various sectors including the transport industry in Harare where operators are accepting EcoCash money from commuters.
In an interview, Mapako Tours transport co-coordinator Mr Clemence Makoni said his organisation recently reached an agreement with Econet to provide the service.
He said the service which was launched at their offices in Tshabalala high-density suburb on Sunday was meant to ease change challenges.
“The service brings convenience to passengers particularly in cases where challenges of change arise. The service also ensures that all the money paid by our customers gets into the company’s account,” he said.
During the launch, Mapako Tours drivers and conductors were trained by trainers from Econet on how to transact using the facility.
Mr Mapako said each of their fleet had a merchant code that passengers used when paying.
When payment has been made, the conductor in the commuter omnibus which the passenger is travelling in will receive confirmation of the transaction.
In a separate interview, the company’s director Mr George Mapako said they will soon run a promotion to encourage their passengers to use EcoCash.
“Starting from 15 February right up to the end of March, Mapako Tours will be running a promotion to encourage our customers to embrace the EcoCash service,” he said.
Presently, Econet is pushing the use of EcoCash in many areas of economic activity such as payment of school fees and utility bills.
