THE Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has begun a comprehensive review of its performance during the first half of 2026 as it seeks to accelerate implementation of key programmes ahead of the final stages of the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2).
The two-day workshop, which started in Bulawayo on Thursday and ends on Friday, has brought together officials from the Ministry and its State Enterprises and Parastatals to assess progress made so far this year, identify implementation challenges and develop strategies to improve delivery during the second half of the year.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Engineer Joy Makumbe, said the workshop provides an important platform for collective reflection on achievements and areas requiring improvement.
“The workshop is focusing on reviewing milestones achieved against set targets, identifying gaps that may have hindered implementation and developing practical solutions to improve performance. Among the key objectives are reflecting on progress recorded during the first half of 2026, identifying challenges encountered during implementation and drawing actionable lessons to enhance service delivery and programme execution,” said Eng Makumbe.
She said the review comes at a critical juncture as the Ministry prepares for the Mid-Term Review of its 2026 Annual Plan and a corporate governance oversight workshop scheduled for this weekend in Bulawayo.
Eng Makumbe said insights generated during the workshop would help inform future planning and strengthen oversight mechanisms across the transport sector.
“The review would help strengthen accountability, improve coordination among departments and entities under the Ministry, and ensure that resources are utilised effectively to achieve intended outcomes,” she said.
The workshop is expected to examine performance across a range of transport and infrastructure programmes being implemented by the Ministry and its agencies, with particular attention being given to targets set under NDS2.
Government has identified transport and infrastructure development as a key enabler of economic growth, trade facilitation and national competitiveness, making efficient implementation of sector programmes critical to the attainment of national development goals.
Recommendations emerging from the workshop are expected to guide implementation during the remainder of the year and support efforts to improve service delivery, project execution and overall sector performance.
