URBAN grooves star Trevor Dongo is officially off the market after paying bride price for his long-time sweetheart, Ashley Maumbe last weekend. Trevor D, as he is affectionately known, got engaged to Maumbe, a 2013 Miss Global International Zimbabwe finalist in April last year.
The artiste, who paid Maumbe’s bride price at her parents’ family home in Zimre Park, said he was grateful that he had finally married the woman of his dreams.
“I just want to thank God that I managed to pay lobola for someone I really love. She’s the one for me as she completes me. I can’t look for anyone else,” he said.
The Ndashamisika hit-maker, who is fresh from staging shows in the United Kingdom, said he met Maumbe in 2012 while shopping for attire for one of his shows.
“We met in 2012 at a boutique in Harare. I was looking for clothes to wear at a show while she was looking for a dress. We became friends and later dated,” Dongo said.
Asked if she realised he was a musician, Maumbe said she did not and only realised after he told her more about himself.
“One thing I admire about our relationship is the fact that Ashley loves me for me. She had no idea who I was and only got to know I was a musician after some time.
“She didn’t care much and wanted me for me,” Dongo said.
While models are generally unpopular due to the recent sextapes and nude images which have made their way to the public domain, Dongo said he loved his girl as a model and supports her career.
“My wife is a model who’s working on setting up her own modelling agency. I’m cool with her career and I’ll soon be assisting her to scout for models to join her agency,” he said.
It is no surprise Dongo married a model as he swept a bunch of them off their feet at the Miss World Zimbabwe finale where he serenaded them as they cat-walked on the ramp. A smitten Dongo said his hit song African Girl off his latest album Handisi Kumira was inspired by his wife to be.
“African Girl was a dedication to Ashley as I composed the lyrics after being inspired by the way she carries herself. She is such a cultured girl who is a true representation of an African girl.”
Questioned when he would walk Maumbe down the aisle, Dongo said some time this year.
“Wedding bells are definitely around the corner. Though a date hasn’t been set, people should be rest assured that we’ll take them by surprise,” he said.
The two lovebirds have never hidden their affection for each other, always posting cosy images of themselves on social media networking site — Facebook.
Though he has had a fair share of ups and downs since he shot to fame in the late 2000s, Dongo remains a force to reckon with in the urban grooves genre.
He was once accused of impregnating an 18-year-old dancer early last year but he denied the allegations saying Maumbe had already ‘stolen’ his heart. — Harare Bureau/Showbiz Reporter.
