Triangle hosts Champion of Champions boxing extravaganza

The bout will see boxers from all corners of Zimbabwe trading leather in different categories.
Zaba national chairman Lovemore Malianga confirmed that all logistics to ensure the success of the tournament were in place.

He said boxing enthusiasts will definitely enjoy the night.
“This is the last programme on our calendar. Each province has its champions in the different weights and the Zimbabwe National Army is considered a province under the association and will therefore send pugilists for the bouts as a province,” said Malianga.

He said national championships were normally used to select boxers for the Champion of Champions but due to the  low turnout in the National Championships that were held in Hwange this year, boxers were now expected from  various stables and including those   that did not send participants to  Hwange.
“We wanted to also use the Hwange tournament to select boxers to participate in the African Olympic qualifier which will be held in Tunisia next year but unfortunately the turnout was too low. We are as a result going to have another tournament next year to select boxers for the qualifiers,” said Malianga.

Some of the boxers that are expected to trade leather in Triangle include Stephen Masiyambumbi, undisputed national flyweight king Last Magare, Josephat Mufayi, Obrien Keith Magare, Godfrey Nyoni and Trust Mbewe.

The Hwange-based Magare who used to fight in the flyweight division has since moved to the bantamweight division saying the former lacked challengers.
Matabeleland North coach Fibion Magare was by yesterday still looking for sponsorship to take the provincial team to Triangle.

Malianga said he hoped all provinces were going to make it to Triangle. He appealed to the corporate world to chip in with whatever assistance they can to assist the boxers meet travel and other expenses.

In the Hwange National Championships, only three provinces — Matabeleland South, Midlands and the hosts Matabeleland North managed to send boxers as  most provinces including Bulawayo failed to raise funds for the tournament.

The Hwange tournament also saw the ever controversial Gamuchirai Sibanda boxing as a female. Sibanda, whose gender remains a mystery, caused a furore some years back when she competed in athletics as Samukeliso Sithole and was convicted for impersonation.
