THE curtain comes down on the 2024-2025 Triathlon Zimbabwe season tomorrow with fun events and end of season awards at Mount Pleasant Pool.

Events on the programme for the day range from Sprint, Trifit and TriFun Triathlon, AquaFun and Aquafit Aquathlon, DuSprint, DuFun and Dufit Duathlon races as well as TriTots, TriKidz and Trisport.

Triathlon Zimbabwe vice president Pamela Fulton said they are looking forward to tomorrow as they also have a number of their athletes also shortlisted for the Sports and Recreation Commission’s Annual National Sports Awards.

“Sunday is an exciting day for triathlon Zimbabwe where we celebrate another successful season, thank our loyal sponsors, (Sports and Recreation Commission and Zimbabwe Olympic Committee) for their support throughout the year.

“And then celebrate our ANSA finalists in the evening.”

The ANSA awards are scheduled for tomorrow evening at Cresta Lodge.

Those who made the ANSA shortlist include Callum Smith and Rohnan Nicholson both nominated for Junior Sportsman of the Year, Andie Kuipers (Sportswoman of the Year), Rachel O’Donoghue (Junior Sportswoman of the Year) and Fulton (Coach of the Year).

Tomorrow’s event will also see the national association recognising outstanding athletes for the season, with series certificates being awarded to the top three athletes in each age category who accumulated the most points throughout the season.

“This weekend’s event closes with the prize giving where athletes will be awarded in each category for the season series as well as the National Championship trophies being presented.

“These are taken from our National Championships results from our Troutbeck event.

“We also have a few extra trophies, which are awarded to athletes that we feel need special mention.

“Some of these awards are the Perseverance Trophy awarded to an athlete who continues to keep trying and never gives up, Most Outstanding Male and Female Newcomer, Most Improved Male and Female Athlete as well as the Most Outstanding Athlete of the season. We have a few candidates for this award and all will be revealed on Sunday,” said Fulton.

Some of the athletes that have been on the lead during the season include junior athletes Callum Smith and Stanely Chasakara.

In the youth category Zander Botha and Rachel O’Donoghue dominated most of the events. Olivia Beamish, was not to be outdone as she also proved her mettle.

The trio were part of the team that represented the country at the South Africa Junior and Youth Championships where they also did well.

Botha won a gold medal in the Youth Boys Under-15 while O’Donoghue got silver in the girls’ category and Olivia Beamish settled for bronze.

Olivia’s younger sister Alexis Beamish won bronze in the Youth Girls Under-13 at the same event. The fun event will also serve as a preparation platform for the team that is travelling to South Africa for the Africa Triathlon Championships next week. “The actual event is a fun event, so it is not part of the season series, so athletes can compete in any event they choose and can race with friends in a relay if they so wish.”

The team is made up of Smith, Chasakara, Botha, Matthew Hildebrand, Ethan Donzva, O’Donoghue and Olivia Beamish.
