TRIBUTES pour in for kwaito legend Siphiwe “General GTZ” Sibisi.
General GTZ, who was the last surviving member of the legendary group Chiskop, died on Sunday, 29 September after a long battle with cancer.
The kwaito pioneer (49) founded Chiskop with late Mduduzi “Mandoza” Tshabalala, Sizwe “Lollopop” Motaung and Sibusiso “SB-Bless” Thenjekwayo in the 1980s.
They were regarded as the foundation of kwaito music.
General GTZ died while the kwaito music team was mourning the death of their fellow kwaito star Sandile “Mapaputsi” Ngwenya, who died earlier in September aged 48.
Kwaito group Trompies member, Eugene Mthethwa told Daily Sun they’re still shocked by the loss of kwaito musicians in a short space of time.
“After attending Mapaputsi’s funeral a week ago, I was fortunate to have visited General in hospital to check how he was doing.
“He was recovering well and assured me he was feeling better. I was shocked when I learnt that he has died,” Eugene said.
He said many people will remember General GTZ for the Chiskop’s song, titled UyaClaimer.
“All Chiskop members were respectful. They were known for doing cross-culture music. We shared a stage with them, and never had any beef or issues with them. We were like brothers.”
Musician Demor Sikhosana described General as someone who always landed a helping hand.
“Rest in peace, GTZ. This man played a major role in assisting us get into the game back then. His work won’t go unnoticed. R rest in eternal peace, bro” Demor said. – (@DailySun)
