TRIBUTES have been pouring in for the Dynamos and Warriors striker Norman Maroto, who passed away yesterday morning.
Maroto, aged 40, died at a medical institution in Harare after a short illness. He made his mark in domestic football in the early 2000s under Moses Chunga’s renowned Kidznet project at Dynamos. Throughout his career, Maroto also played for local clubs such as Gunners and FC Platinum.
It has been 13 years since a local striker scored over 20 goals in a single season. The last to achieve this feat was Maroto, who netted 22 goals for Gunners in 2010. Since then, no striker has surpassed the 20-goal mark.
In 2023, Ngezi Platinum forward Takunda Benhura won the Golden Boot with only 13 goals. Nelson Mazivisa came close with 18 goals in 2012, and the following year, Tendai Ndoro also scored 18 times. CAPS United forward Dominic Chungwa had an impressive season in 2018 with 17 goals.
At the time of his death, Maroto was serving as the Communications Officer for the Footballers Union of Zimbabwe. Social media has been flooded with press statements and individual tributes to the former striker.
