Caribbean Islanders, Trinidad and Tobago scored big at the recently held Harare International Carnival Street Party when they won two prestigious awards on Saturday night after the street parade.During a prize giving ceremony in the Africa Unity Square the country’s Exodus Orchestra Steel Band was awarded the best
overall act and best International act at the second edition of the carnival.
In the international category, the group emerged the best, beating Brazil’s Momo King and Italy’s Storci Sbandriratori delle Contrade di Cori.
While accepting the awards, the Minister of Arts and Multiculturalism in Trinidad and Tobago, Douglas Lincoln, applauded the country for successfully pulling off an event of such great magnitude.
“I want to congratulate the country for hosting such a big event that attracted so many people,” he said.
He intends to cement ties with the country by offering 10 arts educational scholarships every year to local students.
The scholarship will see local students studying more on carnivals in Trinidad and Tobago.
Other winners at the carnival included Gule Wa Makulu that came out best in the seniors’ Traditional category.
Zimbabwe College of Music emerged the best group in the contemporary category with Sandra Ndebele as the first runner-up.
Beverly and the Sexy Angels came on number three.
Participants at the junior carnival were also acknowledged and Harare Girls High School retained their title as the best high School
act.
They were also named as the overall third best group at the carnival!
A total of 16 countries, that included Zambia, United Kingdom, Egypt, DRC, China, South Africa, United States of America, Trinidad and Tobago, Botswana, Ethiopia, Brazil, Malawi, Kenya, Angola, participated in the carnival street march and the carnival at large.
