Trio arrested for leaking maths exam

TWO teachers from different schools in Gweru and a cook at Mkoba Teachers’ College were on Thursday last week arrested for allegedly leaking an Ordinary Level Mathematics November Examination Paper One to pupils and private candidates.
The paper which O-level candidates sat for last Monday might have to be reset by the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec).
Praise Dube, a teacher at Presbyterian Church Private College in Gweru, Thulani Nkomo, a teacher at Hwata Secondary School in Lower Gweru and Shepherd Manjanja of Mkoba Teachers’ College, allegedly leaked the examination paper to candidates in and around Gweru.

It is alleged that the two teachers hatched a plan and opened a sealed Mathematics Paper One envelope and copied the questions before giving Manjanja to sell to candidates.

Midlands provincial education director, Mrs Agnes Gudo confirmed that two teachers had been arrested for allegedly leaking the examination paper.

“There is a report which indicates that two teachers from different schools in Gweru allegedly leaked exam papers to candidates. The matter is being handled by police and the two teachers have been arrested. For further details, I refer you to the Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council provincial offices. They are the ones who have been mandated to deal with such matters,” she said.

However, sources alleged that Dube gave Manjanja a hand-written examination paper which he was selling to candidates some of which were at Mkoba Teachers’ College.

The matter came to light when the Principal of Mkoba Teachers College got a tip-off from some students that their colleagues had a copy of the Mathematics Paper One examination.

“When the principal quizzed the students, they divulged that they bought the hand-written exam paper from Manjanja. The matter was reported to the police and Manjanja immediately arrested,” said the source.

Manjanja, the source added, implicated Dube leading to his arrest.Nkomo was also spotted with the paper after leaking it to some of the candidates.

The paper was sat for on Monday while the Paper Two will be sat for on Thursday.
Last year a school head at Njeremoto Secondary School in Sesombe Resettlement area in Zhombe, Vimbai Manaka was arrested together with Bonaventure Mungwiro (42), a teacher at Manunure High in Kwekwe, his brother Berbandino (40), a teacher at Munyati High in Kwekwe, William Gondo a student from Midlands State University and Michael Chiridzo (40), and Lloyd Mpofu who are both teachers at Chiridzo Private College in Mbizo, Kwekwe, for leaking Geography Paper Two and Integrated Science Paper Two.
