Truck crew beaten by robbers over ‘little money’

A haulage truck crew  was severely assaulted by highway robbers while parked at a lay-by along the Gweru-Mvuma highway because the only money they had was the US$100 they needed to pass tollgates and the robbers told them this was “too little”.

When the assault produced no more cash, the robbers drained the truck’s tank of its diesel and stole the battery and the cellphones belonging to the crew.

Midlands Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the driver Mr Stanley Mapfumo (28) and his assistant Mr Richman Njikizana (23), who had a Hino truck, were parked around 4am last Thursday at a lay-by to rest.

“As they were sleeping inside their truck with doors and windows locked, two unknown suspects armed with logs smashed the driver’s window with a log before they demanded cash,” said Insp Mahoko.

The crew said the only cash available was US$100 which they intended to use for tollgates.

The two robbers grabbed that cash, but then started assaulting the crew while demanding more.

The incident was reported at Mvuma police station and the police attended to the scene.

“We appeal for information that might assist the police account for suspects who are still at large,” said Insp Mahoko.
