A haulage truck driver recently lost the car tyres he was transporting after being ambushed by a gang of three robbers who zipped him in a sleeping bag along the Mutare-Harare Highway.

Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the incident, saying Mr Earnest Chenjerai Kuipa (43) who is employed as a driver by Dxyle Global Logistics Company was attacked while changing his vehicle’s burst tyre.

“The gang of three unknown men bound his hands and legs with shoelaces and zipped him inside a sleeping bag.

“As he was trapped inside the sleeping bag, they carried him for about 10 metres from the road and left him there.

“One of the robbers was left guarding Kuipa, while the other two went to rob his truck,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

The robbers stole 24 tyres from the truck and loaded them into their vehicle. They also syphoned 250 litres of diesel from the haulage truck.

After they had left, Kuipa managed to unzip the sleeping bag and rolled to the road.

He was assisted from the bag by another motorist who was driving by.

The good Samaritan untied Kuipa and helped him to make a police report at Odzi Police Station.

The robbers are yet to be identified and nothing was recovered.
