A group of truck drivers sprang into action yesterday after discovering a severely injured man on the side of Harare Road, near the Headquarters 1 Infantry Brigade- commonly known as Brady Barracks- in Bulawayo.
The man, later identified as Siphosami Prince Mafashu through his national ID, was found bleeding heavily from the mouth and nose, and appeared to have been the victim of a brutal assault.
According to eyewitnesses, the drivers spotted Mafashu lying motionless by the roadside and immediately stopped their vehicles to render assistance.
They revealed that when Mafashu regained consciousness, he had revealed that the people who attacked him had demanded that he repeat a Zanu-PF slogan, which he failed to do, leading to the violent attack.
“We saw him lying there and thought maybe he needed help or was unconscious. When we got closer, we realized he was in a very bad state, bleeding from his mouth and nose, he also had a rather deep cut on his right hand, which was bleeding profusely and he could barely speak,” said one of the rescuing truck drivers, Mr Bhekimpilo Ndlovu.
“When we searched his pockets for any identification, we found his ID and saw his name was Siphosami Prince Mafashu. We knew we had to get him to hospital as fast as possible.”
The drivers quickly coordinated to transport Mafashu to the nearest hospital, where he is currently receiving medical care. Hospital staff confirmed that he remains in serious condition but is under close observation.
Residents and motorists traveling along Harare Road are being urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
This publication caught up with Mafashu’s relatives at the hospital, who alleged that previously, he had run-ins with supporters from the ruling Zanu0PF but they had just dismissed it.
The quick-thinking actions of the truck drivers have been widely praised by the local community, with many commending their bravery and compassion in a moment of crisis.
