A haulage truck carrying 30 tonnes of maize seed overturned along the Zaka-Jerera Road this morning after its steering locked while negotiating a curve near Zaka.
The Cooper Logistics truck was coming from Harare en route to Chiredzi.
It veered off the road and landed on its side, spilling part of its load.
No fatalities were recorded, but the incident caused a temporary traffic jam as motorists slowed down to navigate past the wreckage.
Speaking at the scene, the truck driver, Mr Claud Charamanda said the accident happened quickly, leaving him with no time to control the heavy vehicle.
“I was negotiating the curve when the steering locked. I tried to apply the brakes, but the truck would not respond, and before I knew it, it had overturned,” Mr Charamanda said, visibly shaken but grateful to have escaped unhurt.
He said he carried out the usual pre-trip checks before leaving Harare and did not notice any mechanical faults.
“I checked everything before the journey, but this was beyond my control. I thank God I survived without any injuries,” he said.
Residents and passers-by rushed to the scene to assist and later helped recover some of the maize seed that had spilled from the truck.
The accident comes at a time when the Zaka-Jerera Road, a key link to Chiredzi and surrounding farming communities, continues to experience heavy traffic from haulage trucks, raising concerns about both road safety and vehicle maintenance.
