POLICE have cracked a Bizarre murder case after two men were arrested for savagely beating a man to death with a log before hiding his body under a truck to cover their tracks.
The incident occurred on September 13 at Simpson Business Centre, Durban Mine in Inyathi.
Mbekezeli Mpofu (21) and Erich Nkomo allegedly teamed up with three accomplices to attack Thembani Nkomo (24).
According to national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the gang brutally assaulted Thembani all over his body for unknown reasons.
“They struck the victim with a log several times before hiding the body beneath a parked Howo truck,” said the police in a statement.
In a grim twist, the unsuspecting truck driver later drove off, crushing the corpse and leading investigators to initially treat the case as a fatal road traffic accident.
On closer inspection, the ‘accident’ did not make sense, leading to further investigations that blew the lid off the killers’ carefully constructed plan.
The suspects vanished after the attack and fled to Gokwe, where police tracked down and arrested Mbekezeli and Erich on 17 September.
“The other suspects, only identified as Hlayolehle Ngwenya, Ephithule Ncube and Mhlople Duman, are still at large,” said Comm Nyathi.
He appealed to the public for help in tracking down the fugitives.
“Anyone with information is urged to report at any nearest police station,” he said.
The motive behind the gruesome killing remains a mystery, but investigators believe there may have been a personal feud between the suspects and the victim.
The two arrested suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
