THE Committee of Friends Trust has donated 405 textbooks to 30 high schools in the region in a bid to improve the pass rate in science subjects in Matabeleland. In an interview recently, the secretary of the committee, Mr Joshua Sithela Mpofu, said 10 schools from each province benefited from the donation last week.
“We donated 405 textbooks to schools in Bulawayo, Matabeleland North and South provinces. A total of 235 Focus on Physical Science and 170 Focus on Biology textbooks were presented,” said Mr Mpofu.
He said Bulawayo beneficiaries included Luveve, St Bernards, Sizane, Mpopoma, Mzilikazi, Towsend, St Columbus, Pumula, Hamilton and Nketa High Schools.
“In Matabeleland North the beneficiaries were Binga, Fatima, Mabhikwa, St James, John Tallach, Hlangabeza, Gloag, Mosi-oa Tunya, Tsholotsho and Inyathi High Schools.
“In Matabeleland South, Manama, JZ Moyo, Gwanda, Mtshabezi, Matopo, Mzingwane, Phakamani, Usher, Tongwe and Thekwane High schools also benefited from the presentation,” he said.
Mr Mpofu commended the response and support his organisation got from the heads of schools under the initiative.
The committee of Friends Trust was founded in 1985 as a social club but transformed to an organisation with a specific duty to champion the cause of science education in Matabeleland.
The trust has over the years engaged local authorities to take practical steps in the provision of science teaching material at schools under their jurisdiction.
The organisation intends to widen its approach through the establishment of a scholarship fund to pay for students from poor families to access A-level as well as university education in Zimbabwe and the Sadc region.
