A blind Harare pensioner, Mr Tera Kutya, has received a borehole from the Zimbabwe Pensioners Welfare Trust.

Mr Kutya became blind after getting an eye infection in 2020.

Through its welfare initiative, the Zimbabwe Pensioners Welfare Trust sourced funds from different organisations to install a borehole for Mr Kutya in Retreat, Waterfalls.

At the hand-over, Minister of State for Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs and Devolution Charles Tawengwa, who was represented by Engineer Herbert Parichi said: “We are very happy with this, we are impressed to see pensioners being remembered in such a way.

“We look forward to seeing such developmental initiatives as espoused by our President towards achieving Vision 2030 of an empowered upper-middle income society.”

Mr Kutya expressed gratitude for the donation, saying it will go a long way in helping him and the community access clean water.

“We are very happy as a community because we were prone to waterborne diseases due to water shortages,” he said.

Zimbabwe Pensioners Welfare Trust chief executive officer Mr Amatu Rwazembe said they were working hard to assist pensioners in line with President Mnangagwa’s mantra “Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo/ Ilizwe lakhiwa ngabanikazi balo”.

“We are making sure that every pensioner lives a stable life after retiring from duty, hence the organisation is working tirelessly to ensure pensioners’ needs are met,” said Mr Rwazembe.

The organisation is also introducing many small businesses such as horticulture production, fisheries and poultry production to empower pensioners across the country.

Mr Rwazembe said the trust will introduce a programme for pensioners to buy solar systems on flexible terms.

Pensioners will also be offered skills training through a partnership under the National University of Science and the Technology and the Scientific and Industrial Research and Development Centre to enable them to run their self-help projects profitably.

A housing scheme is also expected to be commissioned soon for the benefit of pensioners.

The trust sourced land from the Government to deal with accommodation challenges among pensioners.

The Zimbabwe Pensioners Welfare Trust was formed by war veterans.

A number of people attended the event, including Zanu PF War Veterans League Harare Province chairman, Cde John Guta, who was representing Secretary for the War Veterans League, Cde Douglas Mahiya.
