Trust hails Zimsec for video exams

The Deaf Zimbabwe Trust (DZT) has welcomed the decision by the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) to introduce video examinations for learners with hearing impairment, saying it will go a long way in uplifting learners.

The video examinations will start this year and previously, learners who are hard of hearing were subjected to the same mode of instruction with those who do not have hearing challenges.

Zimsec said the content of their examinations will however, still be the same as the learners use the same syllabus.

The Second Republic under President Mnangagwa has emphasised the need for inclusivity and giving opportunities to all.

DZT Executive Director Ms Barbra Nyangairi said the development was welcome.

“We are happy with this development. It increases confidence in learners knowing that they are examined for what they learn.

“This will also increase awareness that even non deaf learners and families can also take lessons in Sign language,” Ms Nyangairi.

Despite her appreciation of the opportunities coming up, Ms Nyangairi also expressed concern over the education they were receiving in schools around the country.

She also challenged employers to employ more workers with hearing impairments and implored the Government to look at giving more incentives to companies who employ people with disabilities.

“The challenge which needs to be corrected is that when learners with hearing impairment get to secondary education, they are relegated to practical subjects which is bad,” said Ms Nyangairi.

“What we want is that they should be allowed to do all the subjects. Even if they fail, we need them to get this exposure.

“Our appeal is for employers to employ them, but they will say they are not qualified so that is why we want this problem to be addressed right from their education.

“We also appeal to authorities to give rebates which are lucrative for those companies who employ people living with disabilities,” said Ms Nyangairi.
