TRUST THE PROCESS, NOT THE RESULT, SAYS CHIREWA

TAWANDA CHIREWA has fallen in love with the systematic processes which he believes will form the basis for the Warriors identity going forward.

The Wolves midfielder was in high spirits yesterday as the national team conducted their first field training session as a unit ahead of their 2026 World Cup qualifier against Benin in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, tomorrow.

Chirewa has acquainted himself well in the national team where he is leading the goal-scoring charts in the qualifiers with two goals.

He is just a goal off leaders Victor Osimhen and Steve Mounie of Nigeria and Beni in Group C going into the last four games of the campaign.

Asked if he had one eye on top-scoring charts in Group C, Chirewa said:

“It’s not something I think about to be honest. What I think about mostly is our qualification as a team.

“For me, individualism is not what matters.”

Sitting at the base with four points in six games, Zimbabwe are yet to win a game in this campaign.

The chances for the Warriors to make their bow at the global showcase look very slim but the players have vowed to fight until the end.

Chirewa believes getting to know each other, and building a philosophy as a unit, is what matters. “It’s a process as a team. Every game is important. I wouldn’t say focusing on the wins is that important.

“The most important thing is the process and the system. Playing and getting to know each other because it’s important to know how each of us play.

“That way we will build a formidable team that is very good and competitive.”

Chirewa returned to Wolves from a loan spell at English Championship side Huddersfield and is praying to see the same influence he has in the Warriors squad translating to the English Premier League.

“I have always wanted to come back (to Wolves) and try and muster it in the first team.

“I wish to perform well, be in the match-day squad and have an impact.

“I will continue working very hard and see what comes out of it. Otherwise I am ready as always.”

Chirewa’s stock has been rising over the past year and compatriot Marshall Munetsi’s huge impact in Wolves’ colours could, in one way or the other, have a positive outcome on the lanky youngster.
