The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) will deploy 20 educational teams on the country’s major highways during the festive season in a joint campaign with the police aimed at reducing road traffic accidents caused by human error.
The campaign will run from December 15 to January 5, 2020.

Speaking during the World Remembrance Day (WRD) for victims of road accidents 2019 in Chivhu recently, TSCZ acting board chairman Dr Gift Machengete urged motorists to observe the rules of the road during the period in question.

“Let me therefore, take this opportunity to inform you that the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe, in conjunction with the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), will deploy 20 educational roadblock campaign teams across the country’s major highways from 15 December 2019 to 5 January 2020,” he said.

“Therefore, I urge you all to always observe road rules. You must always practice vigilance, you must always exercise extreme caution as other motorists may not observe the road rules and put you in harm.

“This is mostly caused by the huge and increasing number of unlicensed drivers on our roads.”
Dr Machengete said TSCZ was working with various ministries to ensure road safety and rehabilitation.
“I am pleased to inform you that as the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe, we have been working closely with the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs in drafting regulations that provide for more deterrent penalties for traffic offences, including driving without a valid licence and speeding,” he said.

“We are also working closely with the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development in road rehabilitation programmes, in an effort to make our roads safer.”
Dr Machengete stressed the need to develop latest ICT standards that help to improve driving performance by eliminating distractions related to the use of ICT gadgets while driving.
