TSHAPONGWE FC were on Saturday afternoon crowned Mutete champions after beating Old Nuli 1-0 in a soccer tournament sponsored by director of national security in the president’s office, Albert Nguluvhe.
Tshipanini and Family Stars came third and fourth.
The tournament, which is in its second year, was held at Tshapongwe primary school, some 40km east of Beitbridge town.
Legendary Highlanders defender Douglas Mloyi was the guest of honour.
For their efforts Tshapongwe walked away with R5.500, a floating trophy, gold medals and certificates.
Nuli FC, Tshipanini and Family Stars received; R3.500, R2.500 and R2,000 alongside silver and bronze medals and participation certificates.
Nguluvhe, who comes from Tshapongwe area, said the tournament was held in memory of his father Mutete and it was part of his social responsibility programme.
“We have a lot of talented soccer players here who are failing to make it to the professional leagues due to lack of exposure hence we have brought scouts from soccer clubs from different parts of the country,” he said.
Nguluvhe donated soccer balls and kits to all the participating teams.
Plans are already underway to have a netball tournament.
“It’s very important that we give back to society as community leaders. I’m calling on the business community here to work together with government in initiating community development projects” he said.
Nguluvhe said he was busy assembling Mukwevho FC, a team he would sponsor up to the premier soccer league.
Speaking after the tournament, Mloyi described the tournament as a stepping stone for many soccer players in Beitbridge.
“We’ve seen abundant talent and we will support the tournament.
“It’s also important for the players to have self discipline if they’re to make it big in their sporting careers,” said Mloyi.
