Tsholotsho communities successfully rebuilt after devastating 2016/17 floods

GOVERNMENT’S efforts in alleviating the trail of destruction that was left by the 2016-17 flood disaster that left more than 300 families homeless in Tsholotsho, has been commended, with the affected communities being rebuilt and capacitated.

This was said by the Matabeleland North Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Richard Moyo in his welcome remarks that were read by Mrs Fungai Nkunziwalela at the 2025 commemorations of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction at Tshino Primary School in Tsholotsho today.

The commemorations are being officiated by the Minister of Local Government and Public Works Daniel Garwe.

“The destruction of Mahlaba Primary School and the displacement of learners are still fresh in our memories. However, through the support of the Government under the Department of Civil Protection, our development partners, business persons and community at large, we have made strides in rebuilding and capacitating our communities,” said Minister Moyo.

He said the Civil Protection Unit in Zimbabwe has been instrumental in responding to disasters, including the Tshino Flood Disaster

Minister Moyo said this year’s localised theme, “Children and Youths as Agents of Change for Disaster Reduction,” underscores the critical role the young people play in shaping a safer future. “Matabeleland North Province, where we are all gathered today, is a region prone to various disasters, including droughts, floods, and strong winds. The province has experienced its fair share of challenges, with the 2016/2017 floods being a notable example,” said Minister Moyo.

The Minister noted that the province has taken significant steps to mitigate the risks and promote disaster risk reduction, noting that the provincial Civil Protection Committee led by the by director local Government services Mr Tapiwa Zivovoi has been instrumental in coordinating disaster response efforts and promoting awareness about disaster risks.

He said as the nation commemorates the DRR, it had to be noted that the country is expecting normal to above normal rainfall and the forecast presents both opportunities and challenges.

“On the other hand, it promises a good harvest and improved water security. On the other hand, it increases the risk of flooding, landslides and other disasters. We must therefore use this occasion to redouble our efforts in disaster risk reduction and management. We must ensure that our communities are prepared, our infrastructure is resilient, and our response mechanisms are robust. We must also empower our children and youths to play a leading role in promoting disaster risk reduction and management in the communities,” said Minister Moyo.

He hailed chiefs in taking a leading role in disaster risk management in the province

“Their leadership and wisdom are invaluable in our quest for a disaster- resilient Tsholotsho. I commend our local Chiefs for their unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of our communities.

“Our youths have also been at the forefront of disaster risk reduction efforts, volunteering their time and skills to support disaster response and recovery efforts. They have been instrumental in promoting awareness about disaster risks and encouraging their peers to take action. I salute our young people for their energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to creating a safer Tsholotsho,” said Minister Moyo.
