What began as a light-hearted comedy act at the National Youth Symposium in Harare yesterday turned into an unforgettable moment of laughter, humility, and surprise for comedian Leroy Tadiwanashe Zawari, better known as Comic Elder.

The award-winning funnyman had the audience, and even President Mnangagwa, in stitches with his quick wit and bold humour, transforming the closing ceremony into a showcase of spontaneous brilliance.

After receiving the Best in Comedy Award from the President, Comic Elder cheekily asked for His Excellency’s address, sending the auditorium into a frenzy of laughter.
“Your Excellency, please give me your address. Because if you fail to give me the gift you promised, I will come home myself to collect it!”

The crowd roared, chanting his popular stage name “Anna Mugwaku”, as President Mnangagwa smiled and playfully patted the comedian’s head in amusement.

Moments later, the room erupted again when the President, clearly entertained, announced that Comic Elder would receive a brand-new double-cab vehicle as a token of appreciation. The announcement was met with thunderous applause and chants of joy, sealing one of the most memorable highlights of the symposium.

Earlier, while presenting the award, the President had remarked in jest, “Mumusoro makazara zvinhu umu” acknowledging the young comedian’s sharp mind and creative brilliance.

Comic Elder’s spontaneous exchange with the Head of State showcased not just his humour but also the growing recognition of the creative arts as a vital force in youth empowerment and national pride.

As he walked off the stage to cheers and song, the moment captured the power of laughter to bridge generations and uplift the national spirit, proof that sometimes, wit can indeed drive away the weight of the world, one joke at a time.
