TSHOLOTSHO will this week play host to the Matabeleland North Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) Officer Commanding’s Sports Gala that will culminate with the Prisons Day Commemorations on Friday.
Prisons Day is an annual event where ZPCS commemorates its role in the criminal justice system by holding provincial-level events to highlight rehabilitation programs, showcase inmate innovations, and promote public engagement with restorative justice initiatives.
The commemorations often feature activities such as drill displays, music performances by local artists, sporting events, and exhibitions of the skills inmates gain through rehabilitation programs.
“This week, ZPCS Matabeleland North Province is going to be hosting the Officer Commanding’s Sports Gala in Tsholotsho,” said provincial ZPCS spokesperson Assistant Principal Correctional Officer Cynthia Magutshwa. The officers as well as inmates will compete in eight sporting disciplines, soccer, netball, chess, pool, darts, tug of war, athletics and volleyball.
Assistant Principal Correctional Officer Magutshwa said the games will get underway on Wednesday with indoor games, chess, pool and darts with the rest of the games being played throughout the day on Thursday.
“The games are done yearly as a platform for officers in the province to meet and mingle. We also incorporate inmates teams,” she said
She said the culmination of the activities will be on Friday with the Prisons Day commemorations which will be graced by the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Richard Moyo.
“Finals for soccer and tug of war will be held during the Prisons Day commemorations,” said Assistant Principal Correctional Officer Magutshwa.
Matabeleland North has 11 prisons of which some are satellites.
