In the DVD, Mtukudzi calls on community members to look after natural resources, specifically trees, the soil, water and practise waste management. Environment Africa director Barnabas Mawire said Mtukudzi has been an influential figure in their campaigns.
“Our working relationship with Tuku has been cordial. He has been promoting environmental awareness campaigns. He has been our environmental ambassador for many years,” he said.
“Oliver (Mtukudzi) is very passionate about the environment. If you go to his rural home, he has conserved a lot of trees and inspired villagers around him to look after the environment,” said Mawire.
EA is closely linked with another musician, Pax Gomo, who has teamed up with various artistes to adopt urban forests.
The veteran musician was appointed the United Nations Children’s Fund regional goodwill ambassador for Eastern and Southern Africa in 2011.
Tuku has also been a cultural ambassador since 2009, an honour bestowed on him by the Project Concern International and in 2008 he was designated Zimbabwe’s tourism ambassador by the Hospitality Association of Zimbabwe.
With his husky voice, he has become the most recognised voice to emerge from Zimbabwe and onto the international scene and he has earned a devoted following across Africa and beyond.
His career spans several decades and incorporates elements of different musical traditions, giving his music a distinctive style, known to fans as Tuku Music .
Mtukudzi has had a number of tours around the world. He has been on several tours in the UK, US and Canada to perform for large audiences. Over the years, Mtukudzi has been associated with different brands in the country because of his high international profile.
