GRANDAD of Zim music Oliver “Samanyanga” Mtukudzi is this weekend expected to perform at the potentially explosive Standard Bank Joy of Jazz festival slated for South Africa. This year’s edition will be held at Sandton Convention Centre from September 24 to 26. Simply known as Tuku, the veteran guitarist has carved a niche for himself in the music industry and has also established a huge fan base in South Africa. He is certainly going to add glamour to the festival.
The Mutserendende hit-maker will share stage with world’s best jazz legends from South Africa such as Hugh Masekela, Ray Phiri, Vusi Mahlasela, Wanda Baloyi, Steve Dyer, Jimmy Dludlu, Nduduzo Makhathini, Siphiwe Dana, Stimela and Lee Oscar.
On of the organisers of the event, Peter Tladi of T-Musicman, said Tuku would feature with Shai-Shai Mbira Ensemble.
“Africa’s finest Jazz legends will make the session more exhilarating. The festival has been categorised in four structures which are Mbira, Congas, Diphala and Dinaledi.
United States artistes billed to perform include Cecile McLorin Salvant, Peabo Bryson, Yellow Jackets, Dee Alexander, Halsall, Marcus Miller, Dwight Trible, William Parker and Larry Carlton.
“The rest of the line-up is quite impressive and diverse with artists from Italy, India, Cuba, Israel, United Kingdom Switzerland namely -3Cohens, Estelle Kokot, Paulo Fresu, Trilok Gurtu and Omar Sosa,” he said.
Head of Group Sponsorships at Standard Bank, Hazel Chimhandamba, said the bank’s 16 years of association with the festival was lauded and vowed to continue retain the esteemed relationship.
