The superstar, as Mtukudzi is referred to by his fans, gave “vanaWasu” a show for the archives. A show that will linger in their minds for years to come. The lanky musician went on stage towards midnight after Mutare-based jazz musician Steve Chikoti had earlier gave a good account of himself.
The two musicians were putting an icing on the cake following a day of golf at the Claremont Golf Club organised by the hotel which saw both amateurs and pros like Tongoona Charamba and Nyasha Muyambo playing.
“Samanyanga” opened the show at a pedestrian pace with a solo performance during which he played songs like “Sarawoga” as his band was preparing the stage for the one of his best shows ever.
Like wine, the tall musician is maturing with age. From his bagful he mixed new and old songs and the people loved it. With his band now on stage, Mtukudzi churned hit after hit non-stop sending the audience into derilium.
From his wide discography he picked such hits like “Neria”, “Mupfumi Ndiani” and “Kurarama Huita Madiro”, keeping the crowd, composed mainly of the high-heeled who had spent the whole day on the golf course, on their toes.
The house went crazy when Tuku turned to his latest offering “Sarawoga”. They sang along with him as he played “Watitsvata” and other songs from the album. The show, a rare treat for the hill-perched Juliasdale community, ended in the wee hours of Sunday.
The house was full despite the high US$35 entry charge.
Some of Tuku’s fans from Harare could be seen among the crowd dancing the night away. Hotel management was left convinced they had ordered the right meal for the music-starved “vanaWasu”, who screamed appreciation throughout the night.
