The Turkish Embassy through its charity foundation this week donated 18 wheelchairs to people with disabilities in Harare as part of its programme of touching lives through humanitarian projects.
This is part of the project under which the embassy will donate 500 wheelchairs countrywide.
The gesture is also part of the embassy’s efforts to complement Government in building communities and to uphold Section 83(a) of the Constitution, which addresses the issue of self-reliance for persons with disabilities.
Turkish Ambassador Hakan Kivanc said it was their passion to enhance the lives of vulnerable groups in communities.
“As we get closer to Ramadan (Muslim Holy Month), it has always remained our passion and commitment towards enhancing the well-being of vulnerable groups including persons with disabilities in communities. These people are part of our lives hence the need to keep their needs fulfilled,” he said
Embassy representative Mr Adam Yidi Wadi said the embassy was touched by the plight of people with disabilities, hence their intervention in support of Government initiatives to cushion the vulnerable groups.
“We have got so many people needing these assistive devices in our communities. Our purpose is to close the gap of poverty and make sure they are confident enough to know they are supported and loved,” he said.
