Turkish Airlines has expressed an interest to fly into Zimbabwe and also establish links for cooperation with the country’s aviation sector.
On Thursday, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona who was attending the International Road Federation (IRF) World Congress 2024 in Istanbul, Türkiye, visited Turkish Airlines where he held discussions with senior officials of the airline.
The IRF congress, which ended yesterday was being held under the theme “Connecting to Empower Mobility: Roads as Enablers of a Sustainable Future for All”.
Minister Mhona was accompanied by Zinara board chairperson Dr George Manyaya, Zinara chief executive Mr Nkosinathi Ncube, Zimbabwe Traffic Safety Council board chairman Mr Kura Sibanda and managing director Mr Munesu Munodawafa at the congress.
On Thursday, Minister Mhona met with the Turkish Airlines board chairman Professor Ahmet Bolat.
They discussed various areas of cooperation in the aviation sector between the two countries.
This week, Zimbabwe and Türkiye signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at co-operating in the fields of transport and transport infrastructure.
Minister Mhona and his Turkish counterpart, Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu, signed the MoU.
More than 20 foreign airlines are flying into Zimbabwe, largely attracted by growing passenger numbers to and from the destination, a growing economy, peace and tranquillity, vibrant tourism and the Government’s open skies policy.
Some of the international airlines servicing Zimbabwe include Ethiopian Airways, South African Airways, Qatar, Emirates, Kenya Airways, Euro Wings, BA Comair, Air Link, Rwanda Air, Air Tanzania, Malawi Airways Fastjet, Mark Air and Uganda Airlines.
Zimbabwe, under the Second Republic’s “Open for Business” mantra and the engagement and re-engagement policy, is making strides in luring business investments that are transforming key sectors of the economy.
